"Chapel Hill"
They say you can’t go home again. But some of us never find peace until we try. “Chapel Hill” is the story of Cole Franklin whose early tragic life and personal loss almost destroys his spiritual faith and ability to love. Returning home, an ex-marine chaplain, after years of self-exile, Cole finds himself in the middle of a struggle between his old community and politicians who want to redevelop the neighborhood against the wishes of the inhabitants. Reluctantly drawn into this political and sometimes deadly battle by his mentor and childhood Pastor, Cole endeavors to help his friends, vanquish his personal demons and find love. Moving and inspirational, this is a story about a real man in today’s world. Written in the spirit of a modern day Frank Capra, featuring a strong ensemble cast, this journey is a mirror that reflects the souls of all who travel with Cole Franklin.
Returning home after years of self exile serving as a missionary and eventually several wars as a Marine Chaplin, Cole Franklin comes home to hide from the pain and suffering he's seen around the world. Suffering from a crisis of faith, Rev. Cole is reunited with his pastor and surrogate father Reverend Jackson (both of his parents are deceased). Jackson now in his late 70's has been struggling to keep the venerable church on Chapel Hill (located Oakland/ Berkeley, CA) alive in the wake of the city's plans to level much of the low income integrated neighborhood. The city’s preference is to apply the striking plans of a forward thinking developer, Mark Zimmer. Mark wants to turn this part of town into a modern high rise upper income community, housing most of the current residence couldn't afford. Rev. Jackson needs and welcomes Cole to help him to fight these developers and to save his home along with the rest of the neighborhood.
But Cole is too broken and emotionally spent to deal with another "war". He meets Alicia, a single parent of a sweet 12 year old girl who reminds Cole of the child he lost. Alicia is drawn to Cole but Cole refuses to trust this potential happiness and resists her. Eventually, when someone dear to him is murdered, Cole is drawn into the struggle. He is shocked to find that the current Mayor, who is leading the city's campaign with the developer, is his old childhood nemesis, former street thug, Sidney Kane. As events become more embroiled, Cole becomes more passionate and the old fires that made him a healer and a servant of the people is revived. When Rev. Jackson's life is threatened, Cole really steps up and the political, social and spiritual fight is on! Cole falls in love for the first time in a long time and his soul is resurrected with his faith. As these various challenges all come to a harrowing and moving climax, Cole finds that the power of God has saved him while he was in the midst of trying to save his friends. Though there are some losses and compromises, "life and hope" has been resurrected.
